Guilt

In a residential Edinburgh street one night, two brothers run into and kill an old man. Uninsured and under the influence, record shop owner Jake persuades high-flying lawyer Max to cover up the act. But their actions soon come back to haunt them.

Max does his best to take control, while Jake finds himself falling in love with Angie, the dead man's niece. With suspicions surrounding Walter's death growing, Max desperately needs to regain some control over the situation and starts by trying his best to derail Kenny, the private detective he engaged to assuage Angie's suspicions.

Angie and Jake's burgeoning but complex relationship has hit a problem. Jake has a few suspicions about her, but she manages to explain away his worries. Jake wants to make things work, but she gives him a reality check. How would they live off Jake's record shop, given Max controls the finances - a fact that baffles Angie. Jake starts asking questions about why Max controls the shop's accounting and as a result pressure is applied to Max from another source. Is there more to the record shop than it first appears? Who is really in control of Jake's shop and his future? Unable to control his little brother's rocking of the boat, Max takes matters into his own hands, with terrifying results for Jake.

Sheila claims ignorance when she discovers Walter's real niece has contacted the solicitor. In order to protect his brother, Max orders Jake to leave the country with Angie promising to sort everything out. Angie has still not shaken off her suspicions of Max and sets about proving to Jake that Max is not looking after his brother's best interests. Meanwhile, Max and Angie have their own separate suspicions about Sheila's real involvement in the night of Walter's death.

In an Edinburgh cellar, two gunshots ring out. Across town, Max McCall is released from prison. These two events gradually converge as Max tries to rebuild his life.

In Edinburgh's Leith area, a vast re-development is being promised by the mysterious Phoenix Company, but something lies in the way - a rundown church and its fearless Minister Sandy. When Max and Kenny pursue the truth of their illicit work for Roy, they cross paths with Sandy, and come off worse for the altercation. 

Max and Erin's relationship grows ever more complicated, as the pressure on Max from his police handler Jackie steadily increases, and he has a surprising meeting.

Max and Jake pick up arguments old and new, while the Lynch family face their darkest secret. Max offers Erin a way out but is running out of time to find one for himself.

Skye's plan to try and to scare off Danny and his gang backfires, while Max and Jake's pub in Chicago is heading for financial ruin. Meanwhile, Sir Jim Sturrock opens a community centre in Leith, and Teddy is managing a cannabis farm in the Borders for Maggie Lynch.

Max and Jake seek refuge with a face from the past in the Highlands, but Teddy is on their trail. Scotland's national bank is being sold, and Maggie sees an opportunity.

Max, Jake and their new gang hide from Maggie in Edinburgh and discover her link to Sir Jim Sturrock. Maggie exerts pressure on Teddy, while Aliza risks the bank sale.

Max and Jake have a plan for final victory, but so does everyone else. Maggie's enemies close in, and Sturrock's bank sale is in danger.
