Comic Relief

Comic Relief, recorded live by Omnibus, in collaboration with Charity Projects, was the comedy event of the year. Featuring some of the best comic talents in Britain today, it's helped to raise well over half a million pounds for Oxfam, Save the Children, and for those who are still struggling to fight famine in Ethiopia and the Sudan.

In this unusual documentary Tony Robinson travels throughout Tanzania to look at the real reasons for poverty in Africa. Back home helping to explain what he discovers are actors Richard Wilson and Jim Broadbent , with Peter Sissons , Gerald Scarfe , and Peter Snow , two talking trees and a Plasticine lion.

The evening is rounded off with reports on Comic Relief UK from Stephen Fry , Ben Elton and Dawn French. Since Comic Relief began in 1986, over £92 million has been raised by the British public. A Mori poll calculated that 30 million people got involved last year, raising over £l8 million The work goes on and tonight's programme reports back on the progress of last year's campaign and the projects it helped to fund. Six comedians will deliver progress reports in unusual or ridiculous ways, including Julian Clary in a Rupert Bear hot-air balloon Jo Brand in a chocolate factory and Ruby Wax in front of a huge pile of ready cash. Interspersed with all this are edited highlights of last year's programme featuring Mr Bean on Blind Date, Victor Meldrew in the bath and an all-star rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. Documentary footage showin Comic Relief projects that have been particularly successful will include last year's reports from Joanna Lumley, Lenny Henry and Zoe Wanamaker.

Plus the result of the viewers' poll held overthe past five weeks, the clip found to be the "Funniest Thing Ever Seen on BBC2".

Part 2 explodes into action with French and Saunders - an hour of love and affection towards the world, and intense hostility towards each other.Including at 9.35 Oliver 2: Let's Twist AgainThe final gruesome end to this Dickensian tale. Plus superstars Eric Clapton and Mick Hucknall come together to play and sing the blues. Then it's time for Ruby's Million: like Anneka with attitude, Ruby Wax goes on a mission to raise a million pounds. To raise money for this year's Red Nose Day, Emma Willis, Oti Mabuse and Rylan are taking on the unforgiving, subarctic terrain of the Cairngorm Mountains in the Scottish Highlands. It's a once in a lifetime challenge, taking place over three gruelling days and two freezing nights, and the trio need to adapt to the elements as they trek through this vast and sometimes dangerous landscape, before attempting to summit Cairn Gorm, the majestic and intimidating mountain that gives the area its name.Embarking from the historic town of Braemar, the challenge begins with a hero's send-off from locals and the king's personal representative in Aberdeenshire, the lord lieutenant. Carrying heavy, energy-sapping backpacks that contain everything they need, Emma, Oti and Rylan leave the town and toilet facilities behind as they make their way into the wilderness, where the strong winds and steep ascents soon leave them wondering if they have bitten off more than they can chew. A night camping in the freezing rain leaves sleep-deprived Rylan the worse for wear, and after another day facing down the unrelenting elements, the trio arrive battered and bruised at their second camping site in the foothills of Cairn Gorm. Day three is meant to be their attempt on the summit, but the trio wake up to some shocking news.

As the headline piece for this year's Red Nose Day campaign, four brave female celebrities head to the Arctic Circle to take part in Comic Relief's coldest ever challenge.Laura Whitmore, Alex Scott, Sara Davies and Vicky Pattison attempt a four-day, 50km polar expedition that involves climbing thousands of feet as they circumnavigate the Markusfjellet Peak. They have to use fatbikes, snowshoes and cross-country skis, and pull everything they need behind them on sledges that weigh over 20kg each.In this unforgiving landscape, temperatures drop as low as -30C and wind speeds exceed 100mph. Frostbite, hypothermia, avalanche and the risk of getting lost in a white-out are the daily dangers faced by these four intrepid women.
