23-year-old Martin Rauch is sent to West Germany to act as a spy, gathering intelligence for East Germany's Secret Service.

Martin is ordered to break into the hotel room of a high-ranking NATO official and steal a top-secret report.

Martin has been ordered to seduce and bug the head security analyst's secretary Linda on his first assignment during a NATO conference in Brussels, Belgium.

Once the bug has been found underneath Linda's desk, NATO is on high alert. Linda travels to Martin, who scrambles to turn her loyalties around.

Martin is sent back to East Berlin, but is forced to deliver a seemingly harmless package to a mysterious man in West Berlin on the way. 

When Moritz returns to his undercover life in West Germany he is drawn into Alex Edel's fatal plans. Recovering in a room at Charite, Moritz encounters Annett for the first time since he left. He wants to stay home now, she tells him to go West again. Much is left unsaid. She is now in with Schweppenstette, who visits him next and insists, in a tense, father-son coded argument, that Moritz return to his post. Meanwhile Alex Edel has taken General Jackson hostage and forced him, at gunpoint, to film a seething denouncement of US military plans in Western Europe. Lenora follows the whole thing over the wire from the StäV. But by the time Moritz and Kramer get there to break them out before the Police arrive, the damage is already done.

As preparations for NATO's nuclear war game "Able Archer" intensify, Martin receives an order from East Germany that cements his fears about their paranoia. He must warn his Western superiors about the misunderstanding.

Fear of a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the West has become a possibility at East German HQ, while in the West, war game Able Archer reaches its peak. Martin is now persona non grata on both sides of the border.

An exiled Martin Rauch wallows in limbo until his Aunt Lenora shows up and conscripts him into her latest plan working with undercover ANC operative Rose Seithathi on an arms deal in Cape Town

Martin enlists South African mercenary Gary Banks to bring Lenora's weapons shipment through the border war to a new buyer in Angola, but Banks wants his payment in diamonds, which Martin must steal

Martin and Lenora are led into a proxy conflict at an Angolan oil refinery. In Berlin, Walter Schweppenstette tries to get back into favour with the authorities, and Alex Edel focuses on a new cause.

Thomas Posimski starts broadcasting secret interviews with dissidents over protest radio. Lenora must confront the reality of her choices. Schweppenstette is allowed to handle a deal in the West.

Martin arrives back on European soil and is swept up in a romantic fantasy in Paris, where Brigitte tries to convince him to work as a double agent. Tina's application to leave East Germany is denied.

International intelligence agencies are convinced Martin was involved in the Libyan attack. After a failed attempt to cross the border into East Germany, he changes his appearance and lays low.

Tina and her family attempt to escape. Lenora returns to East Germany with Rose, determined to develop top secret communication technology for the ANC in a clandestine programme called Operation Vula.

Martin aims to be traded back to East Germany as a double agent. Tina and her husband are locked in a Stasi prison. Alex breaks into a pharmaceutical company and discovers the secret clinical trials.

Martin is back in East Germany and wants to see his son for the first time. But during a debriefing he becomes suspicious about Lenora's absence and follows her to Rostock, where her plan is revealed.

Lenora is grounded and demoted. Alex organises an Aids awareness demonstration. Martin has acquired three places to escape to West Berlin: one for himself, one for his son Max and one for Lenora.

Martin settles into a normal routine until he's approached by the HVA to do a simple courier job.

Martin is tasked with infiltrating a group of West Germans; Lenora acts on her prison escape plan.

The West Germans drug, question and persuade Martin into traveling with them to Frankfurt.

Martin realizes the squad's intent and its relation to Lenora's cell.
