Netflix Unveils Trailer for 'Mexico 86' - A Political Thriller About Hosting the 1986 World Cup
Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for 'Mexico 86,' an upcoming political sports thriller that tells the untold story of how Mexico became the host of the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Starring Diego Luna, who also serves as executive producer, the film promises to deliver a compelling blend of humor, political intrigue, and Mexican ingenuity.
The movie centers on Martín de la Torre, a cunning Mexican bureaucrat played by Diego Luna. When a last-minute opportunity arises to host the '86 World Cup, de la Torre must navigate the treacherous waters of FIFA politics, armed with nothing but guts and audacity. His mission: outmaneuver the United States and secure Mexico as the tournament host for the second time in history.
However, achieving the impossible comes at a price. To accomplish his goal, de la Torre must break several rules and live constantly on the edge of a red card. In a country defined by power games, every victory has consequences. The film explores the intense world of off-field soccer politics, proving that sometimes the most important goals are scored far from the pitch.
Directed by Gabriel Ripstein, 'Mexico 86' features an impressive ensemble cast including Karla Souza, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Álvaro Guerrero, Memo Villegas, and Juan Pablo Fernández. The screenplay was written by Daniel Krauze and Gabriel Ripstein.
'Mexico 86' arrives on Netflix June 5.
